Last Friday, I had the opportunity to attend the 2024 Drone Industry Summit in Perth. This full-day event, held at The Hub in Bentley Technology Park by Global Drone Solutions, gathered industry leaders and innovators to explore the latest drone technology, hardware, and software trends.

The Focus on Enterprise Drone Applications

While my primary focus is on cinema drones, I was particularly intrigued by the Summit’s emphasis on enterprise applications. Key topics included automation, Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) operations, and emerging solutions like “drones in a box” (such as DJI Dock 1 and 2). These advancements are driving the industry toward safer operations with fewer personnel exposed to risks.

Key Takeaways from the Drone Industry Summit

The Summit featured four main sessions, each offering valuable insights into the drone sector:

  • The Future of Drones: Experts discussed the next big innovations and regulatory changes that will shape the industry.
  • Evolutionary Drone Journeys: This session showcased case studies and success stories, illustrating how drones are evolving across various industries.
  • From Here to There: Remote Operations: Focused on the logistics and challenges of remote operations, with a spotlight on BVLOS capabilities and their potential to revolutionise how drones are used.
  • Ask the Industry: Attendees had the chance to ask industry experts about the pressing issues and opportunities in the drone sector.

Speakers like Mahmood Hussein, CEO of Global Drone Solutions, and Edward Morris from CASA provided insights into the industry’s direction. Others, such as Aaron Dempsey, Chief Pilot at Western Power, shared practical examples of how drones are being deployed in industrial settings to enhance safety and efficiency.

The Rise of Automation and BVLOS Operations

A key theme at the Summit was the growing importance of automation and BVLOS operations. The concept of “drones in a box” stood out as an innovative solution designed for automated drone deployments with minimal human intervention. These systems are particularly valuable in high-risk environments where safety is a priority.

BVLOS operations, which allow drones to be flown beyond the operator’s visual line of sight, represent a significant advancement for the industry. As regulations evolve, the ability to perform BVLOS operations will enable drones to cover larger areas, making them indispensable in sectors like mining, agriculture, and emergency services.

Networking and Strategic Partnerships

The Summit was also an excellent platform for networking. It provided opportunities to connect with decision-makers and influencers in the drone sector, fostering collaborations that could drive future industry advancements. The event’s atmosphere was one of innovation, with a strong focus on the role of strategic partnerships in pushing the industry forward.

Final Thoughts on the Drone Industry Summit

Attending the 2024 Drone Industry Summit was an insightful experience. While my expertise lies in cinema drones, the event broadened my understanding of drones’ vast potential in enterprise applications. Automation, BVLOS operations, and innovative solutions like drones in a box are set to play crucial roles in the industry’s future.

Staying informed about these trends is essential for anyone involved in the drone sector. The 2024 Drone Industry Summit provided a valuable glimpse into the innovations that will shape the future, making it clear that the industry is moving towards a safer, more efficient, and automated future.
